Understanding NIJ Protection levels

  • Selecting the appropriate level of ballistic protection depends on your mission, threat environment, and operational requirements. The National Institute of Justice (NIJ) establishes standardized protection levels to help users choose armor that meets their specific needs.
  • HG1 is lightweight soft body armor designed to provide protection against common handgun threats, including 9mm and .40 S&W ammunition fired from short-barreled handguns. Its thin, flexible profile makes it an excellent choice for concealed wear, extended use, and lower-risk environments where comfort and discretion are essential.
  • HG2 is the highest-rated soft body armor under current NIJ standards and has become the preferred choice for many law enforcement officers, security professionals, and responsibly armed civilians. It is tested to defeat .357 SIG FMJ and .44 Magnum SJHP ammunition while providing enhanced protection against blunt force trauma. HG2 armor is commonly available as soft armor panels and can also serve as a foundation for scalable armor systems by accepting additional rifle-rated plates.
  • RF1 hard armor is engineered to stop rifle threats, including 7.62×51mm NATO (.308 Winchester) FMJ rounds. Designed for high-risk tactical operations, these ballistic plates provide dependable rifle protection while balancing durability, weight, and mobility for demanding environments.
  • RF2 armor is tested to stop multiple rifle threats, including 7.62×39mm MSC (Mild Steel Core) ammunition, one of the most prevalent intermediate rifle cartridges used worldwide, as well as 5.56×45mm M193 and 7.62×51mm NATO M80 Ball. This expanded threat profile makes RF2 an ideal choice for law enforcement tactical teams, military personnel, and professionals operating in elevated-risk environments.
  • RF3 represents the highest level of ballistic protection under NIJ standards. These hard armor plates are tested to defeat armor-piercing rifle ammunition, making them the preferred choice for military personnel, tactical law enforcement teams, and professionals operating in the highest-threat environments where maximum protection is required.

WHAT ABOUT MATERIAL?

POLYETHYLENE

Polyethylene is the most common plastic in the world, known for its high quality and longevity. When it entered the protective market, it once again justified its reputation. A special kind of polyethylene has recently been adapted for use in body armor. The thermoplastic known as ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) is a material rated at up to 15 times stronger than steel. Thanks to our proprietary manufacturing process, millions of UHMWPE fibers layered on each other and then pressed results in the world’s lightest, most durable, and highest-performing armor.

STEEL

Once considered the most popular material for body armor, steel is now no longer the standard. The major drawback of steel is that it does not absorb incoming rounds, but deflects them. This leads to the risk of ricochet, meaning that parts of the bullet may disseminate and hit unprotected parts of the body, like the neck, face, arms, etc. Additionally, armor made with steel is heavier than any other material typically used in body armor, which drastically decreases the wearer’s mobility, making it impractical for professionals to wear for prolonged periods or in specific situations where mobility is critical.

CERAMIC

Ceramic is another material losing its popularity due to the more advanced technologies that body armor manufacturers are starting to utilize. Nevertheless, it is lighter than steel and brings a better absorptive capacity, making it better at preventing severe injuries from incoming rounds. However, there are still some setbacks to ceramic armor. Once impacted, ceramic tends to crack at the impact point, leading to a complete breakdown of the armor when hit with further rounds. Since ceramic armor can’t resist multiple hits, this decreases the safety of the wearer. What’s more, ceramic is rigid enough to constrain movement, making it difficult to maneuver and uncomfortable to wear.

SIZING

Selecting the correct plate size is essential for maximizing both protection and mobility. The primary purpose of body armor is to shield the heart, lungs, and other vital organs—not to cover the entire torso. Properly sized armor provides critical ballistic protection while allowing unrestricted movement in demanding environments.

As a general guideline, the front plate should provide coverage from nipple to nipple horizontally and extend vertically from the suprasternal (clavicle) notch at the base of the neck to approximately ½ to 1 inch above the navel. This coverage protects the body's most vital areas while maintaining a full range of motion.

A properly fitted plate should sit high on the chest and allow unrestricted movement of the arms and shoulders. Plates that are oversized can reduce mobility, interfere with shouldering a rifle, drawing equipment, or presenting a firearm, and may negatively affect overall comfort and performance. Conversely, plates that are too small may leave critical organs unnecessarily exposed.

Choosing the correct size ensures the optimal balance of protection, comfort, and mobility—allowing your armor to perform as intended when every movement matters.
